The Privatist, Sean Heiser

The Privatist, Sean Heiser
December 15, 2017 – January 27, 2018

Sean Heiser is a Malaysian-born artist living and working in Milwaukee. He is a 2017 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Since then Mr. Heiser’s work was presented in the two-person exhibition, The Waiting Room, with Jenna Youngwood at Usable Space, Milwaukee and at the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts, Fond Du Lac, in his solo exhibition Nervous Energy. Mr. Heiser’s work was also selected for publication in New American Paintings, Volume 22, Issue 4, 2017. The Privatist is Mr. Heiser’s first solo exhibition with The Alice Wilds.

Mr. Heiser’s current work explores the relationships between formalism, abstraction, and his own experience. While his work is engaged in dialogues with the history of abstract painting it also incorporates recognizable elements, isolated segments of stylized graphic images or text, that engage the viewer through the familiarity of representation. The resulting paintings seem to exist suspended between the personal and the revelatory, the uncertain and familiar; becoming visceral and idiosyncratic metaphors for Mr. Heiser’s experiences.
