Ordinary Display, Keith Nelson

Ordinary Display, Keith Nelson
February 3 – March 10, 2018

Keith Nelson uses common, everyday materials that have been cast away to create painting-like object-based collages and muted installations. Deceptively simple due to their spontaneous nature of creation, Nelson thoroughly considers each element and placement within each collage.

Trained as a painter Nelson’s current body of work pushes our ideas of what painting is to imply that the medium does not have to be taken literally as a work created with pigment and a brush. Through the use of non-traditional materials and a distinctly sculptural process, painting becomes more of a process of creative problem-solving. InOrdinary Display, Nelson explores the commoditization of aesthetic value through the use of mundane materials. Presentation, context, and minimalist ideology are employed to elevate the ordinary, calling into question the subjectivity of beauty and worth.
